construction of the residential tower 'Tower Zero', Antwerp

We had the honor of collaborating with Atelier Peter Zumthor on the structural design of “Tower Zero,” a residential tower planned for the “Nieuw Zuid” district in Antwerp. The 18+storey tower features a structure composed of ten vertical cores (in red on the plan), each housing the service or technical spaces of the apartments, which form the only vertical load-bearing elements for the building. These ten towers (structural cores) are supported at level +1 by ten pillars through a box girder (ring beam). The slabs between the towers act as diaphragms, ensuring horizontal stability and distributing loads between the towers. Since the tower is conceived as a freestanding structure resting on ten pillars, the plinth remains completely open, allowing unobstructed circulation across the entire plot. Each project presents its own set of challenges, and this one offered valuable opportunities for technical exploration of concrete structures. Unfortunately, the project stopped before execution due to appeal against the permit.
